Unto Arms-Sergeant Kirin Arnise,
With the untimely and unfortunate lapse in health of your Lieutenant, I
have been asked to supervise the 3rd Platoon as well as my own District
in the Wharf for a few days. Some manner of Khtarpan fever, I have
heard, and while serious, should not stand up to the faith of this
city's priests for over long.
Upon reviewing your report dated 5. II. 477., I have issued you,
attached to this memorandum, a number of sheets of parchment, no doubt
to the chagrin of our Civilian Aides and logistics officers in the New
City Guardhouse.
The first is a Bank Note worth ten crowns should you incur any expenses
in your search for one 'Winter,' a strongly suspected Vampiress. The
second is an order for the Guardhouse armouries to provide whatever
stakes, holy water, and other special armaments you may need to
requisition.
In case you were wondering, Arms-Sergeant, you have hereby been
instructed to form a small lance and solve this particular vampire problem.
I have spoken to the Commanders and cleared the deal. You have the
authority to draw a few specialists off their normal patrol routes over
the next two weeks, preferably not for the entirety of that two weeks.
You have the authority to interview and recruit said specialists as you
see fit, with the proper pleasantries to their individual Sergeants and
Lieutenants. You have the authority to hold command over this lance
(even over those equal to your rank), and use it to arrest or destroy
the suspected Vampiress wanted for the murder of a citizen of Arangoth.
That's done for your commands and authority.
For recommendations, I have several. First that you append your
memorandums with your proper rank and not a shortened version thereof.
You are a man-at-arms serving in the Royal Guard of Arangoth, Arnise,
and not a man-at-spells and not simply a man.
Secondly, and more appropriate to your case, I advise that you specify
further the victims of serious crimes in excess of two-letter names
without patronymic or family sobriquet. I understand that you expected
the Lieutenant to whom you were reporting to know the details of this
case, but I would again advise you to be more thorough, whatever the
tightpurses at headquarters thinks of your parchment use.
On the subject of your hunt itself, I strongly recommend that you obtain
the services of a New City Guard with commission or just below, to act
as a liason with that arm of our force that finds itself on the brighter
side of the Iron Gate.* Wherever you spend your off-hours, you cannot
know the wealthier neighbourhoods, their inhabitants, and their local
Guardsmen, nearly as well as can a bobble* who works there. Should said
Guard outrank you, you shall still hold field command, however - unless
he or she chooses to remove you from it at utmost end of need. Finally,
in light of your injuries, I recommend you staff your lance with good
close fighters, and stay well-back of any melee, relying on your faith
and command skills rather than your not unlimited constitution.
I don't need to reinforce the dangers of this assignment, Arms-Sergeant.
Drache's encounters with vampires have been many, but a good deal of
them are short in the tooth, fresh off their death and infection, and
rarely having the cunning and deadliness of a hurnatod with many years
behind it. Some of them, I understand, can gain new and frightening
powers with age. Your first duty is to this city and your King,
Arms-Sergeant, but your second is to your men. If you feel you are not
fully prepared to face this nightmare, do not engage. It may be a good
idea, therefore, to take along a messenger - one of our smaller
Guardsmen, perhaps - in order to call the full fury of the Rampant
Dragon* down upon your prey upon cornering it.
Contact me, or your regular CO, should he return to duty, if you have
any other needs.
Good luck.
Me enxenim,
Arms-Lieutenant Soon ul-Xeo Kadmos,
Xiunlan Quarter, Wharf Garrison

* The Iron Gate stands as the sole portal between the New City (The
Blkdragon, Temple, Market and suburban districts) and the Old City (The
Wharf, Red Lantern, Back Alley)
*'Bobble' or 'Bob' are both slang terms for Royal Guardsmen, coming from
'Bobire', the Arangothian word for such.
*The Royal Guard's symbol is a Rampant Dragon, natch.
