It seems this creature, described below, hunts openly within the inn, and attempted to attack myself tonight, as well as a young 'man' that had been attempting to convince me that vampirism was natural. In addition, I have suspicions, as well as a few points of proof, that is a rather blatant vampire, and believe that his name should be upon the bounty list as such. His words to the perpetrator were along the lines of methods of feeding, and he claimed that evil was inevitably drawn to him. This is merely information- I am not necessarily recommending action in this case. However, I now accuse this cat-like creature of three counts of assault, as well as assault of a Royal Guard. While there I took note of the precense of recruit Wolfram Jackson. As I was about to leave and finish my beat, an argument brewed up between a man and woman, whom I told to stop otherwise I'd be forced to remove them from the inn. The man, (insert Slayde's description here) laughably asked if I was 'Jack', and went on for some time before casting a light spell on the person with whom he'd been arguing. After another few minutes he threatened bodily harm on my person, opening his coat to display many needles whilst he apparently worked up a spell. Taking Jackson and me not to be threats, he strolled for there door, whereupon we pursued him. He cast a spell that sent the needles flying at the recruit, but that did not touch him. In the meantime, recruit Jackson entangled the offender's legs with his weapon and I tackled and shackled him. We then carted him off to the Guardhouse, where he awaits examanination. I have not doled out punishment myself on the grounds that I feel the man, due to the manner in which he conducted himself, is criminally insane, and bears watch. Having come with the Professor of her own free will, she appeared to be calm and cooperative when asked to surrender all weapons. After escorting her to a room where she was locked inside with both key and wards, two Templar Guards were stationed outside for her own protection; and allowed me the opportunity to be fully briefed by Vorfon Stygian. As he has already sent you a detailed report of what transpired between himself and the young woman, I won't burden you with the same information, but include only what occurred after the Professor left the Temple. After performing a thorough physical examination of Magistrate T`Laranor, during which she continued to be fully cooperative, I found no visual traces of unusual aspects to her body. On the outside chance any of her clothes or the armor she wore were affected in some negative manner, they were removed from the room and she was clothed in one of the robes used for our Initiates. Those items have been placed in a safe area after rigorous testing was performed and appear to be free from any taint. Remaining very calm, though speaking only when asked a direct question, I performed Second Sight upon her; with her full permission. Though I wasn't able to pick up anything directly in relation to what the Professor told me about the entity, there was more than a little doubt in my mind in regards to her being compromised. A sedative was administered to her and here was the first time she protested, but to my way of thinking the Magistrate had experienced a very traumatic event; and also this might in some small way control a surfacing of the entity should she truly be infested during the evening hours. On the following day this was to be shown the case in an extreme manner. Former Magistrate Ketara Lyon, a self professed friend of Magistrate T`Laranor appeared at the Temple requesting she be allowed to visit. After a long conversation with Tespin Lyon, I deemed it would not be detrimental to Zybella and in fact might be helpful bringing in someone she was familiar with. Leaving the Templar Guards in place after issuing Tespin Lyons into the room, I gave instructions to be called when the woman was ready to leave; or if any trouble arose. What happened after I left was related to me by the Templars and Tespin Lyon, as I came only at the very end of the incident. When Tespin Lyon first entered, the Magistrate was indifferent, but after a few moments became very solicitous. Upon asking about the condition of her pregnancy, Ketara immediately called out for the Templars to fetch me. Unfortunately that is not what occurred. Instead of coming for me, Templar Marnuth ul-Donnovath Folvad and Templar Sivrian ul-Amurath Dabalbire made the decision to remain; to watch and see how the entity was transferred from one to another. The fates were with Tespin Lyon that day for having forgotten to mention something to one of the Guards, I returned of my own accord to see Magistrate T`Laranor in what appeared to be the process of attempting to indeed infest Tespin Lyon. Quickly using a projectile dart with a heavy dose of sedative on the tip, thank Menxvan she dropped immediately. I fear this is full proof the unfortunate Zybella has in fact, been compromised and is not capable of holding office at this time. On a side note, the Guards were in no way acting on my orders and will be severely punished, being demoted to a lower level and sent back to basic training where they will learn to have better judgment. The man purportedly responsible for this infestation, as well as perhaps to a number of others, has been teleported to the Temple; it being deemed too dangerous and unsafe to house him within the dwelling of Vorfon Stygian. He is being held in a suspended state until a formal ritual can be performed in which myself and a Guardian of Menxruk will extract this being from the infected Allistan. We pray once the entity is banished back to its own realm that all those infected will return to normal. Barring that, this same ritual will be conducted upon Magistrate T` Laranor and she soon should be able to continue on in a normal manner with her life. Thank you for your attention and I look forward to meeting with you in person to go into greater detail about this and other matters of import. Message-ID: <007a01c43d76$6f5986f0$7899e604@Dixie> UNTO VORFON LUCIUS VON STAHL, CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD: Greetings, I write to you from Parmi. Lord Protector Aginor has relieved us. He arrived several days ago with a small number of retainers and elements of the Border Watch. Since then, we have replaced our makeshift defenses with more permanent fortifications. We have some small artillery, an excellent palisade wall (complete with trench) and men enough to keep it sufficiently manned. Parmi is now defendable, and eminently so. However, we are inadequately supplied; the river will provide us with fish for only so long and, in the event of a protracted siege (which I think an unlikely possibility at this time), we would not have the benefit of hunting from the woods nearby. Were such a circumstance to arise, I predict we would be capable of repulsing an enemy force of three times our numbers for approximately one week given our current stores. That said, it is the Lord Protector's order--and my wish!--that the force you send to our aid bring, in addition to its own stores, no less than fifteen hundred (1,500) pounds of grain or chickpea and five hundred (500) pounds of salt pork or beef. This would be sufficient to feed the existing garrison for well over a month. I do not foresee and end to hostilities before then. Inadequately supplied though we are, we are not lame and we have not been idle. Through regular patrols, we control the north-south road between Parmi and Sarla crossing, the east-west road between Parmi and Sarla Brook, and--so long as the sun is up--the area between the two roads. At night, patrols that would normally be operating in that area are brought in to reinforce Parmi's defenses, for it is my belief--Menxvan guide my intuition!--that the enemy is too clever to come at is in daylight. We have also managed to undertake some scouting operations, but with mixed success. I led an expedition upriver with four of my band to probe and attempt to capture a bandit-operated boat. We were carried upriver by the Lord Protector Aginor's dragon. Riding on its back, our heads above water, and with branches and driftwood gathered about us for camouflage, we approached the boat, boarded it, and killed three of the six men on watch with our bows and short swords before the alarm was sounded and the boat's human cargo--perhaps twenty bandits--clambered onto the deck and pushed as back into the water, but not before one of my men was fatally shot through the eye. His blood be on my hands. Lord Protector Aginor's dragon promptly came to our aid, killing one bandit for certain and another probably before retrieving us and carrying us downriver to Parmi. This sortie was not a complete loss, though. We were able to ascertain the depth of the boat's keel; it sits a good four feet below the waterline. We have since taken the liberty of hammering some stout palisade spikes into the soft river mud in the waters closest Parmi. Some more useful intelligence was gathered on my sortie to Valktokat. Growing my stubble into a beard, not bathing for a few days, dressing myself all in rags, and giving myself an especially pathetic beggar's bowl, I hied myself across the river to Valktokat. Much to my surprise, the city is open--or is open to beggars, anyhow. I approached it by the Elgar road, moved within its limits without harassment from the bandits there. I counted thirty in all. They were equiipped with good bows and swords that looked to have been mass-produced. Most wore armor, but nothing heavier than studded leather. These bandits moved about the town freely, their interactions with citizens nothing if not polite. This struck me as odd. Seeking more information, I visited an inn, purchased an ale, and struck up a conversation with the barkeep. I told him was a beggar, but had once been a carpenter that worked for Vorfon Thraxod (the area's once and now disappeared master), whose generosity I now sought. I was informed that Vorfon Thraxod had been succeeded by a Vorfon Broxkad. According to the innkeeper, the men I had seen on my way into the town (the bandits) were Broxkad's men. Broxkad's deputy is a man called Aritz, the immediate superior of the men wandering about town. The innkeeper claimed and appeared to believe that the bandits--Broxkad's men--were engaged in Broxkad's business, the excavation of an ancient Menxvanic temple on the western side of the Darian. Leaving the inn, I wandered about town for the rest of the day, observed groups of four and six bandits coming into and leaving town from all points of the compass. As this activity happened close to dusk, I believe I witnessed a changing of the watches surrounding the town. So Valktokat is unwittingly colluding with the bandits, whose numbers are--adding the thirty I saw in town and the twenty in the boat to the fifty or so we have confirmed through interrogating the captured--at least a hundred, probably more. Please take this into account when you send reinforcements. And for Menxvan's sake, send them quickly! *Me exemil, Abraxas ul-Bralk Caros Magistrate of the Realm *Aptentrod of Parmi 15. Message-ID: <000d01c43f8b$63b1d7a0$e299e604@Dixie> It's that time again. In the wake of IC intrigue, the Chancellery is again short on magistrates (there is only one active besides the Lord Chancellor) and looking to replenish its ranks. Who are the magistrates? They're the men and women in black robes and steel gorgets who adjudicate criminal cases and civil disputes, grant or deny citizenship claims, and assume a host of odd administrative duties besides. A magistrate is a judge, a prosecutor, a clerk, and (sometimes) exeuctioner all rolled into one. What can you do with one? In the past, magistrates have investigated the Royal Guard for corruption, lead the citizen militia against undead hordes, and even fomented rebellion. They've been tame civil servants and shameless demagogues. They've run the gambit from being just and merciful to self-serving and harsh. Owing to their relatively high rank and close relationship with various parts of Arangothian government, ambitious magistrates can, if played cannily, the potential to become quite powerful indeed. ICly, the requirements for becoming a magistrate aren't all that stringent. Generally speaking, your character should not be undead, a demon, Drow, or furry all the time, as characters of this type are viewed with a great deal of suspicion by IC authorities and are not granted citizenship, and citizenship is a requirement for the post. I say "generally speaking" because exceptions have been made in the past: a lich has been Captain of the Royal Guard, werecreatures have been tolerated, and even a half-drow. Citizenship isn't a bugbear. If your char doesn't have it and wants it, talk to me and we'll work something. Besides citizenship, would-be magistrates should also be educated. While having studied law one of Arangoth's universities is not a requirement, it's definitely a plus. Having been schooled elsewhere (another country or by a church) is also acceptable. For those of you wishing to make corrupt magistrates, there is an additional requirement: subtlety. In light or recent intrigues, the Chancellery (the part of the government that supervises the magistrates) will be paying -very- close attention to its new hirelings. So for those of you intent on playing a wolf in sheep's clothing, you had better grow the wool pretty thick. ;) Those of you interested in creating a magistrate character or making a preexisting character into a magistrate should e-mail me a brief description of your character: description, history, and backstory. It doesn't have to be especially detailed, just the broad strokes so I can get a feel for the character. Please e-mail me directly at jdstrausse at earthlink.net (so as not to clutter the ML with a bunch of OOC chatter). Or, if you don't want to bother with an e-mail, feel free to chat me up in /msg. I usually idle under MunInFull, Resque, or Branth. If funding for this training program is required, I can make a request to the Lord Treasurer if you provide me with the necessary information about how much is required and what it will be used for. While I agree that Sergeant Redfeather possesses the necessary skills to instruct such a program, I would not recommend giving her sole charge of this endeavor. While I have no questions whatsoever of her loyalty, dedication, and efficiency in discharging her duties, not everyone possesses the necessary patience and communication skills to make a good teacher. I also have concerns that Sergeant Redfeather may be a little overzealous in her approach to training, and some Guards not used to her strenuous standards may end up in the infirmary suffering from training injuries. I would recommend finding a second instructor to moderate Sergeant Redfeather's methods. While the countryside is not usually our responsibility, I have received word that the Border Watch is contending with an unusual amount of raiding by the Assi in the disputed border zone of Eastern Arangoth. Though the Lord Protector has personally led a force of Watchmen to relieve the area, the Watch cannot provide enough manpower to deal with the situation alone. Magistrate Abraxas Caros, himself a veteran of the army and the Border Watch took several of his veteran compatriots to the nearby village of Parmi, and was recently proclaimed Aptentrod, and deputized his companions and other able-bodied men. He has fortified and defended the village against bandits as best he can, but is is in dire need of reinforcements and resupply. Therefore, I have been commanded by the Sithire to raise a contingent of volunteers to travel north to the Valkthres area to cooperate with representatives of the Border Watch and the defenders of Parmi in dealing with the bandits and making sure that travel by road and by river between Ruthmarna and Transdariania is made safe again. This is a dangerous situation, and hazard bonuses may be awarded if circumstances merit it. Sheriff Elgire made it clear that he feared for his life, and his fears were all too well-founded. Sheriff Elgire also noticed some unusual behavior on the part of the local Vorfon Broxkad, who has taken on new guards who rebuffed the Aptentrod from the manor. Be aware that that the local lord seems to be in league with the bandits, or they have imprisoned or killed him and are creating the appearance that they are in his employ. The bandit force numbers at least one hundred individuals, and they seem to be occupied excavating the ruins of an old Menxvanic temple on the Western bank of the Darian. The significance of this activity is unknown at the present time. If anyone is interested in volunteering for this assignment in Valkthres, please notify me** forthwith so I may organize the expedition and give the volunteers further instruction. As it may be dangerous to openly display the Guard's colors in area, you will be travelling disguised as caravan drovers escorting a supply convoy to Parmi. Attacks upon the caravan are possible if not probable, and the relief force must be prepared to repulse attacks vigorously at any time. Me enxenim, Lucius von Stahl Captain of the Royal Guard in Drache 28. V. 474. [Seal Affixed] ---------------------- * Aptentrod literally means "Overseer" in Arangothian. As a Guard rank, it translates into common as Sheriff or Constable. An Aptentrod is equal to a Sergeant in the rank hierarchy, and are posted as representatives of the Guard in small villages in the countryside. The local lord's guards usually serve as an Aptentrod's deputies when he needs reinforcements. ** Email the list if you want to volunteer a Guard character. This plot could take a while, so it could result in your character being out of Drache and out of the inn for several weeks, so please take that into consideration before signing up. This will be played out in scenes GMed by Mark (Skonar) as well as posts to the channel mailing list. Please respond before Friday June 4th if you want your character to be included. (We'll probably be playing fast and loose with the travel times to get your characters into the action right away, and minimize the time your characters are out of the inn.)
