UNTO LUCIUS VON STAHL, CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD:

I have received a letter from Gerd ul-Alfrith Elgire, *Aptentrod of
Valkthres, describing increased bandit activity along the northwestern
reaches of the Darian River. Aptentrod Elgire's letter has been corroborated
by several Kahlaharan horse traders of my acquaintance, who claim they were
set upon by bandits on the Lurintheti-Netri road on their way to Drache. I
have attached both Aptentrod Elgire's letter and the accounts of my
Kahlaharan friends for your perusal.

As I have yet to appoint a Lord Protector and the Border Watch, as a
consequence of this early thaw, already has its hands full keeping the Assi
on their side of the border, I order you to raise a force of Royal Guard and
dispatch them to Valktres where they are to 1) secure the Lurintheti-Netri
road, Valkthres, and Valktokat and 2) hunt down and capture or kill the
bandits operating in the region.

You or the deputy you charge with the conduct of this campaign will cede
command to the Lord Protector upon his appointment. I expect that will
happen sooner rather than later. Until that time, good luck and good
hunting.

*Aptentrod - Literally translated, it means "guard," but here it is the
title for a sherrif or constable.
*Seal affixed - The seal of the Sithire (Governor) is affixed by the Lord
Privy Seal, who manages (and sometimes answers) the Sithire's
correspondence--with the Sithire's consent, of course. The current Lord
Privy Seal is my character, Branth ul-Alfrith Truxton. ;) In the future, if
you see letters from the Sithire coming from my e-mail address, you can bet
that it's Branth doing the writing at Nisa's (the Sithire's) request.
