From tarmawolf at hotmail.com Thu Apr 1 18:53:03 2004 From: tarmawolf at hotmail.com (Sinner or Saint) Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 18:53:03 -0600 Subject: [Royal Guard] To Captain Lucius Von Stahl Message-ID: ((A copy of this letter would also be left for Commander Maitayna Roche.)) Captain, I had a rather strange visit from Professor Stygian yesterday, in my guardhouse at the Wharf. He entrusted to me some very disturbing news, that if it proves to be true, will be very destructive, should something not be done. I gathered as much information as I could, and enclosed with this letter, a copy of which I have also sent to Commander Roche, are the notes that I took. I also have in my care a copy of the letter referenced in the notes, should you wish to see that as well. I am unsure what we can do about this, but I told the Professor that we would keep an eye on things, and I do plan on making several passes over the entire city while on patrol. Other than that, I await your orders on this matter. Respectfully, Commander Zesstra Riknueth, Wharf Garrison ((And since I'm lazy, I'll just post the short log from the meeting so everyone can see it.)) [23:39] 6It wasn't a question of whether or not the Guard ought to be made aware of information such as he now possessed, but how he could possibly explain bad news of this magnitude in a way that didn't make it sound as if the situation were completely hopeless. And that was the problem that the professor had been wrestling with on his way over to the Wharf Garrison to find a Guard to report this all to. Constance would be expecting his ans [23:39] 216 be expecting his answer soon, and the Guard had to know what was going on without any further delay. [23:40] > 6She stormed in through the door, shaking water from her cloak, the beads running easily down the waterproof weave. It had begun a light rainshower outside, about halfway through her evening patrol, and thus she'd called it off early, lightning getting increasingly dangerous to navigate through. Maw had been left to his own deviced, which would most certainly involve either a good long swim, or the hunting1 --- [23:40] > ---6 and devouring of a dozen deer or so. She shook the water out of her hair, and gave a curt nod to one of the younger wharf guards who passed her, snapping to smart attention as his commander strode past. [23:43] > 6She unshoulderd her crossbow from her back, and nudged the door to her office open, going to her desk and plopping down in her chair. A slender arm reached down, and she pulled open the bottom most drawe on the left side, fishing out a wooden box, and a clean rag. It was a kit that contained various things for maintenance of her crossbow, and she pulled the bolts from their notches and set about drying it1 --- [23:43] > ---6 off with the rag. [23:46] 6He hadn't come here looking for the commander, but since she'd just entered, he might as well take this right to the top and not waste time dealing with someone who might not believe him, or let his tidings get lost in the shuffle. The Commander apparently wasn't in a very good mood tonight, and it wasn't about to get any better. He follows after her, and as she pushes the door to her office open, he tries to get her attention. 1"C [23:46] 216 get her attention. 1"Commander, if I might have a few minutes of your time..." [23:49] > 6She glanced up, stormy grey eyes flashing huge amounts of annoyance at someone disturbing her. A slightly bushy brow lofted, her blue-tinted face softening, well, as much as hers ever would, at the Professor's recognition. 1Professor Stygian. Please, come in. 6The tall half-drow stood, and laid her bow aside on her desk. 1Please, sit down. [23:52] "Thank you, Commander." 6He comes into the office, taking a seat in the offered chair. 1"I'm afraid that I haven't come here for social purposes tonight. I have some rather bad news that I need to make the Guard aware of. It's more of a potential danger than an imminent one at this point, but it's unsettling enough that I didn't want to waste any time in making you aware of the situation." [23:54] > Oh? 6She took her seat again, and pulled the middle drawer of her desk open, slipping a piece of paper out from it. A rather frazzled looking quill pen was plunked into an ink well, and she placed thepaper down atop a scattering of other such things on her desk. It was the typical desk of any high ranking official, cluttered, various piles of parchment and such occupying it. 1What manner of trouble have you1 --- [23:54] > ---61 discovered? [23:54] "It [23:57] "It's not so much that I've discovered it, as it's discovered me. I was recently contacted by a woman calling herself Constance Oblivie, on behalf of an organization called the Order of the Blue Flame. She is, as I am, a lich, and the organization she represents is a brotherhood of liches. She was rather evasive about its nature and purpose, claiming that it was a loose organization devoted to sharing and furthering magical knowledge. [23:57] 21 furthering magical knowledge. What I've been able to find out about them indicates that whereever they appear, disaster follows." -- [23:58] "Plagues, hordes of undead, unnatural natural disasters, and similarly unpleasant occurances tend to accompany their presence. If the numbers she gave me are correct, they number around two hundred and fifty liches of varrying abilities, led by a master who calls himself Azad'hun Myrhal." [00:01] "From every account I can find of him, Myrhal was driven mad by his obsession for power while he was alive, and several thousand years of undeath have only magnified his madness. He wants to come here, to Drache, to meet me in person and convince me to join them. I want nothing to do with him or his Order, and I worry about the consequences of his interest in me. [00:01] " [00:05] > 6As he spoke, the quill went into motion, long, scrawling letters, not all of them in the common tongue, darted across the page, taking shape. She dipped the pen in the ink well a time or two, dragging ti along the lip of the bottle to rid it of excess ink. Her writing was smuged in a few places, as she was a southpaw, and writing quite fast. She took down everything he told her, and took a moment to review1 --- [00:05] > ---6 it before her stern gaze lifted to meet his. 1Professor, you do realize that this sounds a little far-fetched, even for Drache. [00:11] "Yes, I realize that. This is the letter she sent to me." 6He removes it from his pocket and leans for ward so he can place it on the desk in front of Zesstra. 1"That's the letter she sent me inviting her to meet with me. I met her a few days ago at the Sorcerer's Eye, if you'd like to send someone over there to interview the owner. If this woman whom I met was alive, then I am Illurst the Templar Lord." [00:15] > 6A slender, long-fingered hand reaches out, plucking the letter up and bringing it closer to examine it. Her other hand reaches over, turning up the whick of the oil lamp on her desk, illuminating the room a bit more. She read over it, and held it up. 1Mind if I hang onto this? It's not the validity of your claim that's in question. You've reputation enough that I'd be ridiculous if I denied your statements1 --- [00:15] > ---61 as the truth. I simply meant that it's a little odd, that they'd want to come here. Do you have any idea why they want you to join their ranks so badly? [00:24] "You're welcome to keep it, yes. I have no further need for it. As for why the leader of their order is willing to come here to convince me to join him, rather than me seeking him out and begging for admittance to their ranks, I'm not entirely positive just yet. This woman was evasive with me during our conversation, giving me partial answers if she answered my questions at all. However, I think that they may believe that I know somet [00:24] 21 believe that I know something which I don't, or have access to something they want." [00:26] "They know the wizard I once studied under, though I can't fathom how they could have possibly made the connection. Trying to puzzle that out has been bothering me for some time now. But, I think that at the heart of the matter is my old teacher, whom I've not so much as corresponded with in over a thousand years." [00:29] > Have you met any of them before? 6She stuck the letter he'd handed her under the paper she'd been writing on, frowned, and dug another piece out from her desk drawer, laying it atop the other. 1I can't say that I am terribly familiar with things like this. Liches, rather. But certainly a large number of them coming into the area would be noticed? They'd have to have somewhere to stay, correct? I wouldn't1 --- [00:29] > ---61 think two hundred and fifty people would just go unnoticed, as inns would fill up, or...? [00:31] "Other than this woman Constance, I don't believe so. I may have come across a few of their members in the past, but I don't exactly have much of a sense of kinship with others of my kind, and don't have dealings with them frequently." 6And considering that he'd struck down Astyrum the Cruel himself, that wasn't really in doubt. Defeating one lich was enough of a challenge. But to defeat a small army of them? [00:33] "They're wizards. Should they decide to make Drache their basis of operations, it's more likely that they'd simply open some sort of magical gateway to their headquarters in some discrete location in town to make their comings and goings less obvious." [00:35] "So, we might not notice their presence until bad things start happening." [00:36] > Alright. WHat would you like from the guard, Professor? We can certainly keep an eye on things, though our ranks certainly don't contain wizards powerful enough to deal with this. Do you think this... Myrhal would bring his entire "school" with him? 6Her pen paused, hovering over the paper as she gave him her full attention. The cruel cast to her features never once changed, and in fact, they darkened and1 --- [00:36] > ---6 clouded over. This was certainly not the news she'd been wanting to hear. [00:40] "I don't know. That is the absolute worse case scenario if he has some huge fit of pique and decides to take it out on the surrounding countryside. I don't know enough about him to predict how he'll behave. A single lich could reduce to a city to a mound of dust if sufficiently motivated. Aside from divine intervention, I don't know what could stop two hundred and fifty of them. I don't expect anything of the Guard, Commander, but I c [00:40] 21 Guard, Commander, but I couldn't keep news of this sort to myself." [00:41] "I felt it my duty as a citizen to at least report it, even if I can't offer any solutions at the moment." [00:45] > 6She sat back in her chair, eyes narrowed at her notes. She held one page in her hand, thumbing the edge of it lightly as she thought. Propping an elbow on the arm of her chair, she leaned against it, chin resting on the back of her knuckles. 1Well, I am unsure as to what aid we can offer in this situation. It was right of you though, to at least let us know. I would hate for guards to fall needlessly at1 --- [00:45] > ---61 the hands of something that cannot be destroyed by normal means. That much, I know. 6She thought a bit more. -- [00:45] > Tell me, would you have even the faintest idea, if they were to set up a portal of any sorts, or a residence, something of that nature, where you might think it would be? I can easily have patrols increased there, as well as fly over it myself. [00:58] "Not yet, I don't. I'm hoping to learn more." [01:01] > Alright then. I'll draft up a letter to the Captain, as well as the other Commander, informing them of what you have told me. We will try and keep a watch out, and have some of our spell casters try and see what they can do. 6She stacked the papers atop one another, and pressed the fingers of one hand against her temples. It was going to be a long night, afterall. Perhaps the letter could wait until the1 --- [01:01] > ---6 morning, after she'd gotten at least a few hours of sleep and had time to think on it a little. 1Is there anything else? [01:02] * Stygian nods. 1"Thank you, Commander. That is all for now." [01:03] > 6She nodded, and stood, to see him out. 1If you find out anything else, feel free to leave word for me, or any of the other guards. They will see that either myself, the Captain, or the other Commander gets it. [01:03] "Certainly." -Suz _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar ? get it now! http://toolbar.msn.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ From rosuto_enzeru at hotmail.com Fri Apr 2 09:18:46 2004 From: rosuto_enzeru at hotmail.com (Darryl Hicks) Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 10:18:46 -0500 Subject: [Royal Guard] A Call For Volunteers Message-ID: You can count Jinn in, I guess. _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the MSN Premium and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-ca&page=byoa/prem&xAPID=1994&DI=1034&SU=http://hotmail.com/enca&HL=Market_MSNIS_Taglines From lerockeurblanc at hotmail.com Fri Apr 2 17:54:53 2004 From: lerockeurblanc at hotmail.com (Franky Bob) Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 23:54:53 +0000 Subject: [Royal Guard] No offense. The first wagon was pulled by a fine black stallion and a less fine roan mare, quite an unusual team. The fellow holding the reigns was thickset and middle-aged with a jowly, puppyish face shaded by an farmer's oversized straw hat. He was singing 'Like Twin Sapphires Were Her Eyes' in a pleasant baritone above the creaking and clattering of the wagon. Sitting beside him was a short, wiry man of similar age with close-cropped grey hair and baleful grey eyes. He accompanied his friend on a fiddle, which he played quite well. The second wagon was pulled by a pair of high-stepping Kahlahran bay mares, beautiful animals both and even more unsuited to team work than the horses pulling the first wagon. The driver of the second wagon was a big man, but his age and appearance were impossible to discern because he wore his dusty felt hat pulled low over his eyes and hung his head as though he were asleep. The wagons made the crossing without any real difficulty, for the water was shallow and slow. All the drivers had to do was take their time and not hurry thet teams over the loose, slimy rocks of the creek bed. It was no colossal task. The singing and fiddling from the first carriage continued unabated until both wagons were safely on the northern side of the brrok, where they were accosted by two bandits. They stepped into the road twenty yards ahead of the first wagon and drew swords. They wore shabby brown cloaks and had thick beards. "You there! Stop where you are!" shouted the first bandit. "Not a step closer or you're sport for our archers!" called the second. The wagons stopped where they were. The singing and fiddling stopped too. "Eh? Who's that up there? Some boys from the Elgar by the sound of their voices!" the driver of the first wagon shouted back, raising his puppyish to squint at the bandits. "Some boys from the Elgar who have taken me for a fool! I seee no archers!" "Aye, a fool from the Sresar Vale by the sound of your voice and blind to boot!" replied the first bandit. "Look ahead and left, old man. In the stand of oak trees!" "I see nothing!" The bandits began to walk towards the wagons, stopped when they were close enough to be heard without having to shout. "Ask your fiddler and second driver, old man. Surely their eyes are better than yours," said the second bandit. "My fiddler is mute and dumb as a gourd. Aren't you, Perl?" Perl looked uncomprehendingly between the first driver and the bandits. "And my second driver--" "--can see them just fine, Abraxas," said the driver of the second wagon without raising his head. "Forward and left of you in that stand of oaks. About forty yards away. They've bent bows and are pointing right at us. If you can't see them, take me at my word, they're there. So let's stop foxing around and see what these gentlemen want." Abraxas squinted at the stand of oaks for a long moment. "Alright, Branth, settle yourself. I think I see them." "Well, thank *Aith for that," said the first bandit, pointing his sword at Abraxas. "Drop the reins and get down slowly. Make a wrong move and the archers will skewer you if I don't. What's in the back?" "Casks of wine from the Sresar Vale," said Abraxas as he climbed down from the buckboard, his hands in the air. "I am a wine merchant. Perl is my brother and Branth is my cousin. Our family is not without means. They would pay a generous ransom for our safe return." "That's good to know, old man," said the first bandit. "Now have your brother come down to and stand beside you with his hands in air." Abraxas mimed to Perl, who seemed to understand. He climbed down from the buckboard, put his hands in the air, and moved to stand beside Abraxas. "Very good. Now, to the back of the wagon with you both." "And you just stay were you are," the second bandit said to Branth. Abraxas and Perl walked to the back of the wagon. The bandits trailed a short distance behind them "Step aside." They stood to one side, their hands still in the air. "Well, lets see what we've got, eh?" said the first bandit, grinning to his partner as he sheathed his sword, then pushed aside the canvas flaps at the back of the wagon. Things began to happen very quickly. There were no casks of wine in the back of the wagon, but there were five men. Two of them--those closest to the back of the wagon--had crossbows and the rest had bows. The crossbows fired first. No sooner had the first bandit thrown aside the canvas flaps than he was laying on his back, a bolt in his belly. Seeing this happen, the second bandit turned to flee, but was tumbled to the ground when the second bolt caught him in the spine. As this happened, Branth leapt from the buckboard of the second wagon, taking a handful of canvas with him, and uncovering the second wagon. In back were two men with crossbows and four more with bows. As a result of Abraxas and Branth's exchange with the bandits, they knew where to aim. It took them only a moment to locate the bandits in the stand of oaks, bend bows and loose their arrows, but not before the bandits could loose theirs and to considerable effect; two of their four arrows found their marks. The first took Perl in the side as he hauled the canvas top from the first wagon. He crumpled to the ground with a sllue of profanity, no more a deaf mute than Abraxas was a wine merchant. The second arrow caught Abraxas in the left buttock, knocking him to the ground a moment after he could deliver a savage kick to the first bandit's temple. "Gerd, see to Perl first!" he shouted, turning the unconscious bandit on his side and getting behind him, for there was no cover he could get to without exposing himself to more bowfire. "His wound is serious!" Sheltering on the lee side of the second wagon, a crossbow in his hands, Branth looked left then right. After they had loosed their first arrows, the men in the back of the wagons had leapt to the ground. Now they sheltered behind the wagons, knocked arrows and waited for the order to advance, which Branth gave them a moment later: a brisk wave of his hand in the direction of the stand of oaks. The advance was not so fast as it was orderly. Two bowmen behind either wagon stood and loosed their arrows at the bandits, covering the other men as they moved out the wagons and forward towards the stand of oaks. Though they weren't numerate, the four bandits sheltering behind the oaks knew they were outnumbered and that the longer they tried to hold their position, the greater chance they would be overrun and killed. Killed, not captured; the men in the back of the wagons had shot their fellows without warning--without even the slightest hesitation. Equally unsettling was that the band was well-equipped (all except the drivers wore leather armor and carried short swords in addition to their bows and crossbows) and organized. They liked nothing about the band's methodical advance and the gradually increasing accuracy of their bolts and arrows was getting to be a real problem. Quite prudently, they decided to flee, and in separate directions to foil their attackers from a successful pursuit. Falling back, they disappeared into thicker foliage before their attackers had reached the stand of oaks. "No further. We don't know the ground through that brush," Branth said, loud enough to be heard by the other men, halting a short distance from where the bandits had been standing. "They'd pick us off one by one. Fall back." The men fell back, returned to the wagons. Abraxas was upright, the arrow still sticking out of his backside. One of the bowmen, Gerd, was hunched over Perl, examining the arrow protruding from his side. "Alright," said Abraxas, prodding one of the two unconscious bandits with the toe of his boot. "Shackle them and chuck them in one wagon. Fold up that canvas and make a bed for Perl in the other. Brother Branth, take a horse from second team ride ahead to Parmi and make sure it hasn't been taken. Be back in an hour. If you're not, we're turning tail and going back to Drache. Brother Gerd, when you've done all you can for Perl, help me remove this stick from my arse. The rest of you reload, look sharp, and pay to Menxvan we'll see Parmi before dusk." --JD From ceoliath at yahoo.com Mon Apr 5 12:47:25 2004 From: ceoliath at yahoo.com (Blake Murphy) Date: Mon, 5 Apr 2004 10:47:25 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Royal Guard] A Call For Volunteers Message-ID: <20040405174725.92091.qmail@web61307.mail.yahoo.com> I submit either Resolute, if you're lacking for combat spellcasters, or Thorn, who's spent most of his life as a professional soldier in one capacity or another. At first I met a woman whom I shall refer to as the first subject, (Vandale) whom was harrassing other bar patronage and engaging in unpleasantries with said patronage. I advised her and the bar patronage to knock it off, and suggested she purchase a drink for the other fellow to make amends. Shortly therafter she approached me closely, and harrassed my person through muckin' about with my helmet and making advances on my person. I thusly attempted arrest 'pon the first subject's person, whenceforth the second subject (Teagan) did enjoin me in a melee, thus resulting in my needing to shackle the first subject to an iron rod near the ground level, possibly the bar's footrest, or a barstool, I am uncertain with. Melee continued, with a strike to the back of my head by the second subject with a sword, which glanced from my skull, what with my helmet having been muddled with. Whenceforth things calmed, very briefly, to a discussion of terms where I advised all parties of the possibility of a quiet arrest where a Magistrate would sort it all out. Distracted by a patron making his own peace heard, (Apexsomethingorother), The first or second subject, or possibly both, utilized a blade in wounding me in the thigh, below the crotch. Fending for myself on the floor for some moments, I was relieved by the Wharf Commander, (Thanking her presence, should she read this report) and apparently the Professor Stygian. Shortly therafter I was deported from the Inn by Barstaff unto the Guardhouse's Sick-ward. - Arms-Corporal A. I approached the bar, and bent down to examine the shackle woman. When I saw that she was chained with a pair of the Guard's shackles, I said as much to her. She then changed her story and claimed that the Guard intended to rape her, and that the second woman had come to her rescue. I spotted a Guard rank pin upon the man, whom I later learned was Corporal Art Harlow. He appeared to be on the worse end of the fight, and the woman told me that this affair was none of my business. I disagreed, and advised her to surrender peacefully. She refused and retreated from me, claiming that the Corporal attacked the shackled woman without provocation. Furthermore, she claimed that the magistrates of the realm are corrupt, and refused to submit to their judgement. Having already given her an opportunity to surrender peacefully, I began to cast a spell to keep her from escaping. She began to run and dove headlong for a shadowy area of the inn. The lightning spell that I cast nearly missed because of her abrupt increase in speed, but the flash it created eliminated the shadows, causing her to crash headfirst into the wall. She attempted to escape by climbing the walls, so I cast a second spell that rendered her unconscious. Commander Rikneuth, who had been busy with the shackled woman, approached and shackled the unconscious woman, and left her under my supervision while she saw to the injured Corporal Harlow and dealt with his initial prisoner. While I was attempting to transport the second prisoner to the Guardhouse, a strange man approached me. (Description of Dakkon Blackblade given.) He offered to buy the woman, though I didn't ask him what he wanted her for. At best, I imagine that he wanted to set her free as some form of protest toward the authority of the Crown. I prefer not to think about the other things he might have wanted to do with a shackled and unconscious woman. I refused his offer, and he went to speak with some other individual and left me in peace to remove the unconscious woman from the inn. (Banner SL) Message-ID: <003b01c42015$b4cad410$f899e604@Dixie> The following message, encoded with the Chancellery cipher, is delivered by an exhausted messenger to the residence of the Lord Protector: UNTO YAGO UL-ANERR AGINOR, LORD PROTECTOR OF SOUTHERN ARANGOTH: Parmi has been secured, though whether it will remain so will depend on the haste with which you can relieve us here. We are fourteen retired *watchmen come here at the request of Nedixe Sallod, widow of Corporal Gerd Sallod, one of our deceased brothers, Menxvan's light be upon him. *Tespin Sallod wrote to me in Drache shortly after *Her Grace directed Branth ul-Alfrith Truxton, Lord Privy Seal, now among our number, to dispatch the Royal Guard to the Whitepool area in response to the letter of Gerd ul-Alfrith Elgire, the late *aptentrod of Valkthres. In her letter, Tespin Sallod told me of the dire straits facing Parmi. They were terrified of attack, but equally afraid to flee their homes for fear that the bandits would cut them down on the road as they did so--a fear that turned out to be grounded in fact, for the messenger who rode out of the village to bring me Tespin Sallod's letter took heavy bowfire and was very nearly captured. Having apprised me of the difficulties facing Parmi, Tespin Sallod, feeling she had nowhere else to turn, beseeched me as her late husband's brother to ride to Parmi's assistance. I did as she bid me, raised a band of my brothers, and we rode for Parmi. On our way up to Parmi, we were set upon by bandits at the Sarla Brook crossing and a brief skirmish followed. We captured two of the six that attacked us at a cost of two wounded, one slightly and the other seriously. I ordered *Vorfon Truxton to scout ahead while the rest of us tended to the wounded and captured. He returned within an hour; the road to Parmi and Parmi itself were free of foes. We arrived in Parmi a few hours later. On our arrival, the town elder called a general assembly and the citizens, by unanimous vote, named me aptentrod of Parmi. Having deputized the rest of my band and the fitter men of the village, I went about interrogating the prisoners and securing the village as best I could. Our prisoners, initially unresponsive to questioning, became quite talkative after we *gave them a drink. They were part of a six man group--the one that set upon us at Sarla Brook--tasked to watch the Parmi road. Two similar groups are routinely tasked to watch the Parmi-Valkthres and Ruthmarma roads. These groups operate out of two camps. One is located in the forest between Sarla Valley and the Parmi-Valkthres road and the other at an abandoned logging camp due north of Valkthres; their exact locations are unknown. The first camp is smaller with perhaps sixteen to twenty men gathered there at any given time. The second camp is larger with perhaps thirty or thirty-five. Communication between camps is achieved by way of mounted messengers. As best the prisoners can tell, all their fellows are from Elgar Forest. They are lightly armed and armored: bows and leathers. Being from the Elgar, they are all good woodsmen. The prisoners' immediate superior is a man named Silgoth and he has often been seen at the smaller camp. Silgoth's immediate superior is man called Brannoth, who is second-in-command to Gaskalamun, the bandits' ultimate commander. Little is known about Brannoth or Gaskalamun save that they command the fear and respect of their subordinates. One of the prisoners has been kept alive for further questioning. The other has been tried, executed, and his body displayed in a way similar to the banner raised by the bandits. We have planted ours in the middle of the Parmi-Valkthres road just outside the village. In securing the village, I have barricaded the roads leading into the village with wagons turned on their sides and am in the process of converting the granary--the only stone structure in the village--into a makeshift command post and shelter by knocking out a few of its stones to make bow slits. In the event of a raid, this is where I will move the women, children, elderly and infirmed, and hope to hold out. In addition to the weapons we brought with us--each of my band came with good leathers, a short sword, and a bow or crossbow--we brought five crossbows, five bows, and ten swords. I have divided these weapons evenly among the twenty fittest men in the village. Men without bows or crossbows have been ordered to hammer two pieces of wood together that they might at least appear to be carrying a crossbow. Men without swords have been ordered to make replicas of same. At night, barring a good moon, Parmi should appear to be defended by a force twenty-three strong with standard kit. I've divided my force into two watches, one of eleven and one of twelve. The one keeps guard during the day, the other at night. The perimeter we have created is far from ideal, but not unmanageable; however, I hope we will not have to manage it for too much longer. Make haste. Aptentrod Abraxas ul-Bralk Caros, Magistrate of the Realm *watchmen - members of Southern Arangoth's Border Watch, a light infantry / ranger unit charged with protecting the country's eastern border, mostly against Assi bandits. Watchmen tend to refer to one another as "brother." *Tespin - Arangothian for "Lady" or "Mrs." *Her Grace - correct form of address for the Sithire, Southern Arangoth's duchess-governor. *aptentrod - Arangothian for "guard," but here as "sheriff." *Vorfon - Arangothian for "Sir" or "Mr." *gave them a drink - a form of torture developed by the Border Watch to make Assi bandits talk. The prisoner's mouth is bunged up with a piece of cloth, so he can only breathe through his nose. His head is then tipped backwards and beer fizz poured into his nose. The pain is usually so intense that the prisoner will pass out. When he wakes moments or minutes later, he will usually be more than happy to talk. --JD From dedoyago at abv.bg Mon Apr 12 02:18:36 2004 From: dedoyago at abv.bg (P. Sh.) He was found guilty, but in the course of the trial drew my attention to some very troubling rumors that had been circulating about Magistrate Lyon. After the trial I sought and obtained permission from Chancellor Aldenbar to question Magistrate Lyon about Vorfon Devos' allegations. I questioned Magistrate Lyon at the main guardhouse several days later and was disheartened to learn that the rumors Vorfon Devus alluded to were based in fact; Magistrate Lyon admitted that she had allowed herself to be fed on by a vampire since taking office. The relevant portions of the Vorfon Devos' trial and Magistrate Lyon's questioning are attached to this letter. As you already know, Chancellor Aldenbar has suspended Magistrate Lyon until a decision can be made as to what action should be taken against her. Though Chancellor Aldenbar is within his rights to handle the matter as he sees fit, he has quite considerately decided to let the decision rest with us; whatever the penalty the majority of use believes appropriate will be enforced. That said, I ask you to confer with one another and, should you see fit, Magistrate Lyon, and vote as to what action you think ought to be taken by no later than *24. IV. My own vote has already been posted with the Chancellery clerk and will be opened on that date. *Me enxenim, Abraxas ul-Bralk Caros Magistrate of the Realm *4. IV. 474 *relevant portion of Vorfon Devos' trial - Q: Vorfon, you said there were "rumors she had to her name." Exactly what rumors are you referring to? A: She is well-known to be consorting with vampires like the one that I had just met without recognising in the tavern. Particulary they include her being a blood-slave to one of considerable might and guile, which would match the description of the one in the tavern just as well. *relevant portion of Magistrate Lyon's questioning - Q: No, your personal feelings and opinions are not at issue here. I need to know whether or not you've had any interactions with the kindred since you've taken office. Socially, I mean. If you've tried a kindred or talked to one through the bars of its cell? Well, I don't need to know about that. A: Since I have taken office? Once, provided you do not consider Aridia Vlorress a vampire. The kindred in question was my son's guardian for years and followed him here out of concern. When last I spoke with him it was to inform him that he had best leave the city and that if I saw him again he would be treated as any other of his kind. Seneca isn't foolish. I'm sure he's long gone from the city by now. I thought if he left, it would be enough. It's hard to arrest someone you owe a great deal for being what he is. And I can swear that he never killed while he was here. He didn't need to. Q: He didn't need to. Meaning that he fed on you while he was here? And did Chancellor Bourne or myself ever ask you whether or not you'd been involved with the undead at the time of your hiring? I don't recall, but surely you must. A: No, honestly, I do not. I'm certain I should had I been asked as I have had dealings with quite a few undead, mainly liches. I'm aware of the rumours in the tabloids, Abraxas. I had hoped most would ignore anything so ridiculous but, as you can see, there's usually some truth to them. Tertius Seneca did feed from me for the short time he was here, he has no choice. Now that I have refused to allow it, he will starve over time, wherever he may be. Is that satisfactory? *24. IV. - April 24th. That gives y'all two weeks. ;) *Me enxenim - "By my hand." *4. Shortly I heard cry from the BlkDragon Inn, and moved to investigate. I encountered Armsman Kirin Arnise, also in the area, also making response near the door. A dark-robed figure was making his exit, and Armsman Arnise gave chase rapidly. I looked for a clean shot with my bow, and found nothing. Considering my state of health, I chose to investigate the Inn for witnesses. There were a number. It seems that the Barman on duty, by the name of Turner, was assaulted. From what the barpatrons who witnessed the assault explained, and Turner's own testimony, he was assaulted by an unknown person, whom exhibited clear signs of magical capacity. The assaulter seems to have been able to teleport utilizing shadows, something relatively frequently encountered. Further, one patron attests to the assaulter having had a grevious, non-bleeding, headwound, leading one to the belief that he may well have been an undead creature of some description. >From what I can tell, the assaulters base attributes... (A description of Gaajh follows, including the insect-like appearance). It attacked me after some time, and amongst its attacks, it seems to have scythe-like appendages that sprout from its back, with which it attacked me numerous times, as well as it claws and a firey breath weapon. After some time, I managed to subdue it by beating upon its head with my steel hand, and suffered only a few cuts and burns. Shackling what I deduced to be the wrists and binding the legs with cord, a wain was called for which was used to transport the unconcious body to the Guardhouse. The creature now rests, unconcious, in a special holding cell and under watch until such time as it can be examined. I remain a faithful servant of the Guard. 'On this day, in the early evening I stopped off at the Black Dragon inn. I was observing a conversation between individuals identified by witness testimony as Vaetsiil and Xanthe (descriptions, roughly accurate to the names given, are appended to the report). Vaetsiil requested that Xanthe drop his weapon. At this point, a bird spoke to Xanthe, urging him not to do so. Vaetsiil then assaulted Xanthe with an axe with clear intent to seriously injure or kill; Xanthe defended himself with the weapon he had drawn in preparation to drop it or surrender it to Vaetsiil, but did not visibly attempt a return blow.' 'I ordered the combatants to stop, which they did; the aggressor, Vaetsiil, fled in the company of a young lady, just over 5' high, with brown hair, blue eyes, very pale skin and wearing a black cloak.' 'Xanthe and the bird, who claimed to be a magically transformed human named Hitei, testified that Vaetsiil had used threats concerning Hitei's soul to force him to drink a potion, the result of which was Hitei's transformation into the shape of a bird. Xanthe also testified that he had approached Vaetsiil regarding procuring an antidote for what had been done to Hitei, and that Vaetsiil had responded to this with the treachery and violence that I witnessed. Xanthe and Hitei have agreed to make themselves available to give testimony, should the Courts require it.' 'In short: I directly witnessed Vaetsiil assaulting Xanthe with a deadly weapon; Vaetsiil is also accused of threatening behaviour and assault by magic upon Hitei by the testimonies of Xanthe and Hitei.' 'Officer Kirin performed a priestly magic upon Tessa - I do not know the specifics. From this, he judged her to be alive.' 'He left her judgement up to myself. I requested that she be freed, her not being vampiric and the assault upon myself having been arguably provoked as described below. Officer Kirin concurred, and the woman was released without charge.' Furthermore, as a citizen of Arangoth, she should be tried and punished in the same manner as any other citizen. Her status as magistrate does not bar her from the persecution that is her due. And so, I suggest house arrest until she is able to either provide information leading to the destruction of the vampire in question, or provide herself as a line with which to capture it. Also, physical, public punishment is necessary, to show that nobody in Drache is above the law. Therefore, I recommend a public flogging and a period of time in public stocks, accompanied by a full recounting of her crime for the public. When opened the notice will read as follows-- While it does appear that Magistrate Lyon's actions were indeed a very unwise decision, not to mention against Drachean law, I don't believe there need be excessive punishment meted out without a trial being held to formally bring forth all the evidence. It seemed to me from the informal testimony given that she may not have been in her right mind at the time. However, despite having a personal as well as professional relationship with the accused, I must vote toward having her be removed from office, if not permanently, then certainly temporarily. Only in this way may the citizens of Drache be ensured the laws are being enforced equally. UNTO THE CHANCELLERY MAGISTRATES: Several weeks ago I presided over the trial of one Nighten ul-Arathan Devos, a young priest charged with assault on a crown official (Magistrate Lyon) and resisting arrest. He was found guilty, but in the course of the trial drew my attention to some very troubling rumors that had been circulating about Magistrate Lyon. *Me enxenim, Abraxas ul-Bralk Caros Magistrate of the Realm -insert text here- From salisian at hotmail.com Sat Apr 24 22:01:25 2004 From: salisian at hotmail.com (Daniel Thompson) Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 23:01:25 -0400 Subject: [Royal Guard] Incident Report Message-ID: The following note is written in far-too-small, but completely precise handwriting: Upon entering the Black Dragon area this late afternoon to have a mug of tea after duty on the wharfs, I came upon a young lady, (Description of Black^Dawn), fatally wounded, and sensed a great commotion inside, as if a tavern brawl had ended recently. Unable to assist with her condition, I left her care in the hands of a man who I had seen to be her lover, (description of Dalewyn, including current agitated mental state), and proceeded into the inn. I was greeted by two men (descriptions of Robert`Delerado and Damian`Waters) circling eachother in defensive posture. As I ordered them to stand down, Damian did so quite willingly, but upon the approach of a massive bug-like creature (description of Gaajh), the young boy (short description of Robert) pressed the attack. I was able to trip him and Spells-Recruit Roven was subsequently able to spell-bind and shackle him. In addition, an angel-like being (description of Cevyr), accused one of the perpetrators (brief description of Damian) of drawing energy from Dawn. With no evidence to substantiate that claim, they were all left to their own devices, for shortly thereafter, a cat-like creature with a razor tail (description of Delnakk) brought the bug creature into a frenzy. Spells-Recruit Roven was also able to subdue him long enough for him to calm, and vowed on his word that the bug-creature would behave subsequently. The cat-like creature proceeded to attack the bound boy and rend flesh from his back, and due to the intervention of one Jiji and Arms-Recruit Davien, was subdued temporarily. Unfortunately, the creature was able to spray foam into Arms-Recruit Davien's eyes before I kicked the creature across the room. Arms-Recruit Davien was left in the hands of Spells-Recruit Roven and Jiji, who seemed able to ease his pain enough for me to bring the boy into custody. He is in a cell currently, on two charges of assault, and currently unconscious from stress, after having wet himself. The boy was, however, convinced that he was doing proper in attacking both, and I have lingering suspicions about the one he was attacking, (brief description of Damian). Spells-Recruit Roven should have the information on the bug creature, and I believe it wise to question the boy about what he had seen, for I arrived too late to find what had hurt the woman. From later evidence, it appeared to be some form of lovers' quarrel, and my previous experience with her has led me to believe this is true. It seems to like me. Not sure if this is good or bad. The cat-sized insect that spat foam at me, blinding me, escaped through a window. It appeared to show signs of intelligence. Some magic used by Jiji and another man cured my blindness after a while. It should be treated as armed, dangerous and malicious. It also seems to want to harm the big insect, and will no doubt make any problem situation with that creature, worse. = Davien (M_B) _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool emoticons - download MSN Messenger today! http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger From vhaeraunlover at hotmail.com Wed Apr 28 03:08:06 2004 From: vhaeraunlover at hotmail.com (The Scarbinator) Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 20:08:06 +1200 Subject: [Royal Guard] Another Attack in Ye Olde Blackdragyn Message-ID: A report filed by a harried and somewhat bewildered-looking, furiously-blushing clerk, "Approximately midway betwixed midnight and dawn, a distressed young woman arrived at the station, and, ah... politely informed myself that she'd been attacked at the Dragon. Captain Von`Stahl Captain after great thought I have a proposal for you to consider, I have since become a guard in the city of Drache have noticed the outbreak of undead, vampires, demons, and just violence running amuck the city. I wanted to offer you the proposal that I have in mind. I wanted to start a training program to be run by Sergeant Karyn Redfeather (sp?) She is one of many that make up the guard's best. I have asked her if approved by you if she would take it up and be in charge of such a program. I find that being a recruit once before myself, I had experience in fighting but wished I had a bit more to help me against demons such as Jah Kahn, and the undead. I believe this will give our men and women the chance to not only bond as commrads but to also pick up a few skills Karyn might offer....If there is also another that wishes to help with this program they could see me for this. I Sincerely believe that it will help the armsman as well as recruits. I do not suggest this to run anyone away from being a guard. As most know a guard's life is not an easy one, so if this training would help at least one guard in some way then it would have been worth it don't you believe? I will leave this decision in your hands and await to hear from you.....
